First Day of School finally arrives for Effingham County students
Teacher and student at Guyton Elementary first day of school

Staff Reports

Thanks, or no thanks to TS Debby, the First Day of School for Effingham County students was delayed from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12.

The Herald staked out Guyton and Rincon elementary schools to capture pictures of families and students entering school after a summer break – and the warm, welcoming hugs students got from teachers and staff.

There were a couple of sad student faces at Rincon, but for the most part, students seemed eager to get back to school.

According to District Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford, the First Day of School has gone well; however, the district has not made a decision about possibly making up the two missed days of school due to TS Debby.

"The start of the school year today has been good," said Dr. Ford. "Dana King and her staff at the Transportation Department worked very closely with EOM and the County to ensure roads were passable. As of today, we are only having to have two modified routes and expect those to be back to normal soon. It's been a great start!"
