Zion Lutheran Church extends a invitation to all senior citizens to join its community senior citizens group. There are more than 40 seniors, from different denominations, who come from all parts of Effingham County, Pooler, Bloomingdale and Savannah for the monthly meetings that usually are held the Wednesday after the third Sunday.
Some of the informative programs that have been presented to the seniors include: Myra Lewis, county commissioner, discussed the growing pains of the county; Kim Dennis, YMCA director, gave information on services they provide to the county; Dr. Heneisen gave a presentation on good nutrition; Bonnie Dixon from United Way gave a presentation on the services they provide; Bill Tyson, County Extension Agent, gave information on yard care and how to get rid of fire ants; Beatrice Wright shared information about the libraries; and Carrie Thompson presented a power-point program on Georgia-Pacific.
The seniors have toured various places in the county. Linda McDaniel gave a presentation and tour of the Chamber of Commerce building; Betty Renfro gave a tour of the Old Jail Museum; and recently they toured the new County Judicial Complex in Springfield. Everyone was awed by the building and its many modern and beautiful features. Elizabeth Hursey did a wonderful job guiding the tour and answering questions.
The Zion Community Senior Citizens are thankful for the dedicated hard work and food prepared on different occasions by Charlie and Melinda Heidt and Rudy and Caroline Starling, and also Yvonne Falagan for making the monthly birthday cake. On field trips, the group enjoys eating lunch at various restaurants.
The seniors have a very good time socializing together. There are lots of laughs and a family atmosphere at the monthly meetings, as well as on the tours.
In July, Dana Lee Dasher Smith will present the program. She is a music therapist and will be involving everyone in fun activities using music and musical instruments. The meeting is scheduled for July 25, one week later than usual, at 11:30 a.m. at the church.
Zion Lutheran is at 121 Noel C. Conway Rd., across from Marlow Learning Center.
