Motown Sound coming to Mars Theatre
Mars Theatre

SPRINGFIELD -- Feel the magic of Motown soul.

Garfield Fleming and That Motown Band will perform live at the Mars Theatre on March 25 at 7 p.m. That Motown Band has been entertaining rhythm and blues fans for years.

The Motown sound is an upbeat, often pop-influenced style of rhythm and blues associated with Detroit and numerous Black vocalists and vocal groups in the 1950s. At the March 25 show,  "Heat Wave," "Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,"  "Baby Love" and other songs of the era will be performed.

That Motown Band is a 10-piece band with four vocalists, including  Fleming. He is a soul-singing vocalist of legendary status, having been a member of The Delfonics for 25 years with William Hart. His obvious resemblance to David Ruffin makes people look twice but, when he sings, fans get lost in time. He sounds just like Bobby Womack, Ruffin and can also perform the songs of many legendary artists.

In 1981, Fleming released a single “Please Don’t Send Me Away,” which is still played around the world.

The musical director of the band is Johnny Gale,  Grammy-nominated producer, composer, arranger, vocalist and guitarist extraordinaire. Gale is also a renowned expert in the authentic stylings of classic soul, doo wop, R&B, blues and rock. He has performed and recorded with Cyndi Lauper, Dion, Ronnie Spector, Darlene Love, Phoebe Snow, Aaron Carter, M2M, Louden Wainwright III, Jules Shear, Joan Osborne, The Soul Survivors, Hank Ballard, the Dells, The Spaniels and literally hundreds of legendary doo wop groups.

Gale was a recent recipient of the East Coast Music Hall of Fame Legend Musician Award.
