SPRINGFIELD – Cat food is in short supply at the Effingham County Animal Shelter and the adjoining Pet Food Pantry.

The shelter recently joined forces with Coastal Pet Rescue and the Two Black Dogs Foundation to help feed pets belonging to Effingham County citizens who are enduring a rough financial stretch. Located on shelter grounds at 307 GA Hwy 119, the pantry opened Feb. 5.

“The offering is that (the collaboration is) going to help subsidize pet owners until they get back on their feet,” Animal Shelter Director Lorna Shelton said prior to the pantry's opening.

Pet food donations can be dropped off at the shelter. It is open 1-4:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday, and 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

In addition to food, pantry users are given strong encouragement to have their animals spayed or neutered. Two Black Dogs Foundation can help people with the cost.

Pantry hours are 1-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The Animal Shelter can be reached at 912-754-2109.
