Arrest made in Lost Plantation hit-and-run

RINCON -- The Rincon Police Department has made an arrest in the hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a Steven Schmidt, 70, of Rincon.

Just after midnight Saturday, Rincon Police were dispatched to Willowpeg Way, in the Lost Plantation neighborhood. Officers located Schmidt suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.

Sunday, Oct. 27, the Rincon Criminal Investigative Division located Jeremy Lambert, 30, and have charged him with vehicular homicide. Lambert was transported to the Effingham County Jail and booked into custody. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.

The Effingham County Narcotics Unit also charged Lambert with several drug-related charges, including possession of a Schedule 1 substance with intent to sell or distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of tools for a commission of a crime, possession of a knife or firearm during a commission of or intent to commit a crime, and possession and use of drug-related objects, according to the ECSO booking desk.
