A Bloomingdale man faces DUI charges after his recreational vehicle overturned on Highway 17 and tied up traffic for several hours Friday night.
Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies have charged Bart Williams, 47, of Bloomingdale, with driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions and a failure to maintain lane following the accident.
According to witnesses, the driver of the RV was traveling north on Highway 17 at a high rate of speed and swerving in and out of lanes. Williams flipped his RV before deputies arrived on scene. No other injuries were reported.
Highway 17 between Blue Jay Road and Courthouse Road was closed for several hours as crews cleared the scene.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone that deputies will be out in full force enforcing all traffic laws including impaired drivers, seat belt violations and looking for aggressive drivers. Deputies also will be participating in road safety checkpoints throughout the next several weeks.
