Lt. Joseph Coppola of the Guyton Police Department was arrested by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday evening, Nov. 20.
Coppola was booked into the jail on one count of “False Statements or Writings in Matters of Government," a felony. The listed offense date is Sept. 3.
According to an ECSO incident report, an investigation into Coppola’s alleged actions began Sept. 26 at the request of Guyton Police Chief Kelphie Lundy.
Coppola was released on his own recognizance, meaning he did not have to post bond promising to appear in court when ordered to do so.
In a statement, Mayor Andy Harville on behalf of the City of Guyton stated, “In accordance with the policies and procedures outlined by the City of Guyton and the Guyton Police Department, Lt. Coppola has been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately.
“This decision is in line with the city’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability while maintaining the trust of the community,” the statement continued. “The City of Guyton has full confidence that the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an impartial, fair, and thorough investigation. The city is committed to cooperating fully with the Sheriff’s Office throughout the investigative process.”
The Herald has also reached out to Chief Lundy and is still awaiting his response.
This is a developing story.
