Two vehicle-vs.-pedestrian incidents last weekend resulted in two fatalities, prompting the Effingham County Sheriff Office to remind drivers to remain alert and for pedestrians to make sure they are seen -- especially at night.

The first fatality occurred Sept. 22 on Noel C. Conway Road near South Effingham High School during the football game against Effingham County.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash involving an RV and a pedestrian at approximately 9:05 p.m. Friday.

Deputies with the ECSO Traffic Unit arrived on scene and began investigating. It was determined that a pedestrian was walking on Noel C. Conaway Road when the victim was struck by an RV.

The male pedestrian was identified as Herbert Calahan, 68, of Guyton.

Calahan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second vehicle-vs.-pedestrian incident occurred about 3:42 a.m. Sept.24 in Rincon.

Rincon Police requested the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit to investigate the crash.

Preliminary investigation indicates a small sedan traveling south on Columbia Avenue struck a pedestrian who was lying in the roadway.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries.

The victim has been identified as Jessica Shropshire, 40,  of Summerville, South Carolina.

Both incidents are still under investigation.

The ECSO is asking for the public’s help. If you have any information regarding either incident, call 912-754-3449.
