Special to the Herald
Effingham County Girl Scouts joined other Region 3 Girl Scouts for a day of celebration at Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia's High Awards Ceremony in Savannah May 5. Local scouts received their Bronze-, Silver- and Gold awards. Council and National Award adult volunteer recipients were recognized and Effingham County was well represented.
Alexis W. of GS Troop 30549 was awarded her Silver Award -- the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout may earn and the second highest award in Girl Scouts. Alexis cleared land and completed a fire pit to be used by St. Matthew's Church in Statesboro and other community organizations.
Iris G. of GS Troop 30197 was awarded her Bronze Award -- the highest award a Junior Girl Scout may earn and the third highest award in Girl Scouts. Iris created a Campfire Cookbook and shared it with her troop, service unit, and Girl Scouts all over the country. It was even shared with a few troops in other countries.
Many of Effingham's adult volunteers also received recognition. GSHG's Council Awards were presented to Shannon Cottle, Angela Surber, and Emily Williams who received their 20-year numeral guards for 20 years of Girl Scout membership. Williams also received the Appreciation Pin, a Girl Scouts USA National Award, for her service to the Effingham Service Unit. She works tirelessly as the Service Unit leader to provide the Effingham County area events that are fun, engaging, and supportive of all levels of Girl Scouts.
Also receiving a GSUSA National recognition was the Camp Low Rock Wall Team who received the President's Award. Each year this team spends multiple days training to assist and belay hundreds of girls and adults who come to camp to climb.
The challenge course and rock walk are available throughout the year for use by local troops, visiting troops, and summer camps. In addition to facilitating, they train new members and maintain the climbing elements at camp to ensure maximum safety for all. Members of this team from Effingham County are Carolyn Metroz, Jim Moriarty, Jenn Nash, Gianna Smith, and Stacy Sturgis.
The Effingham Service Unit presented a number of awards to its troop support volunteers. Michelle Clark and Mary Surber received their 15-year numeral guards and Brandy Worley received her 5-year numeral guard representing their years of Girl Scout Membership. Jennifer Nash was presented with the Volunteer Service Bar for completing five years as Girl Scout volunteer. Jim Moriarty, Allison Royal, and Brandy Worley were recognized for serving three years as a member of their respective troop's leadership team with the Daisy Leadership pin.
Adult Girl Scouts have just as much fun as the girls. Reach out if you'd like to become a Girl Scout Volunteer and join in the fun.
In Girl Scouts, girls in grades K-12 bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world, knowing the next opportunity to stand up, speak up, and take the lead is never far away. The possibilities for greatness are truly endless.
