At the Exchange Club of Effingham meeting on Aug. 21, Tim Hood, assistant superintendent of Effingham County Schools was the guest speaker.
He gave statistics on how many breakfasts and lunches were served last school year and emphasized it was good food at a good price. Hood said that approximately 49% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
With respect to transportation, 429 bus routes run daily with 8,874 riders and a total of 6,351 miles driven each day, according to Hood. There are anywhere from 35-75 students on each bus. They are actively recruiting bus drivers since they are currently short eight bus drivers. Kim Dennis, director of the United Way in Effingham County, spoke about the kick-off date for the United Way campaign scheduled for Sept. 10. She gave each attendee a copy of a Rapid Response Disaster fund flyer. This fund was started a few years ago after Bryan County experienced flooding. She said that United Way is currently raising funds to help flood victims from Hurricane Debby.
