SPRINGFIELD – If you find a lost pet, now you can take it to one of four Effingham County Fire Rescue stations to check for a chip that will tell you the owner’s contact information.

Effingham County Animal Shelter Director Lorna Shelton has installed chip readers at select ECFR stations.

Implanted under a pet’s skin at a veterinarian’s office, microchips contain a unique ID number. When a scanner reads a chip, it retrieves the ID and links it to the owner’s contact information in a database.

The handheld devices, housed in a waterproof box, are positioned at Station 9 (737 Roebling Rd., Faulkville), Station 12 (1171 GA Hwy 119 North, Springfield), Station 13 (91 Springfield Ave., Guyton) and Station 16 (109 Goshen Commercial Park, Rincon).

The scanners were donated by HOPE (Helping Our Pets of Effingham).
