Special to the Herald

As Hurricane Milton is projected to trek across Florida Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9-10, Gov. Brian Kemp has issued an emergency declaration.

Effingham, Chatham, Bryan, Screven, Bulloch and Long counties are in the declaration list, along with 30 additional counties in SE Georgia.

The emergency declaration is in conjunction with a continuing declaration from Hurricane Heléne and is for the purpose of, “all resources of the State of Georgia be made available to assist in preparation, response, and recovery activities throughout the affected areas; and the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency shall activate the Georgia Emergency Operations Plan,” the declaration states.

Effingham County is projected to receive one- to two inches of rain and tropical-storm-force winds of 40 to 45 mph, late Wednesday and into Thursday. Coastal areas of SE Georgia may experience flooding.

Effingham County residents can download the Smart911 app on their phones to receive real-time updates.

Updates will also be posted on the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency Facebook page.
