Guyton City Manager Meketa Brown submitted her letter of resignation to Mayor Andy Harville and the City Council Monday, March 11. According to her letter, her last day will be April 10.

Her resignation comes less than two months after Police Chief James Breletic resigned his position.

Brown has been Guyton’s city manager since December 2021. Prior to being named as city manager, Brown briefly served as city clerk.

Guyton Councilman Theodore Hamby posted Brown's letter on his Facebook page.
Brown came on board with the city during what was described as a “turbulent period in Guyton history.”

In her letter, Brown highlighted a couple of the city’s accomplishments during her tenure, notably, working with the Coastal YMCA of Georgia to establish a new facility across from Guyton Elementary; and also the establishment of the Guyton Downtown Development Authority.

Her letter continues, “However, as I reflect on my personal and professional goals, I have come to the conclusion it is time for me to pursue other opportunities. I believe this decision will allow the council to find a manager who can fully align with its values, approach to leadership, and vision for Guyton.”
Guyton City Councilman Theodore Hamby posted Brown’s resignation letter on his Facebook page, stating, “It's Morning Again in Guyton! During my campaign, I pledged to enhance the efficiency of Guyton City Hall, and I am proud to announce that today, we have fulfilled that promise.

“The phrase ‘It's Morning Again in Guyton’ is used metaphorically to signal a new beginning with the City Manager's resignation,” Hamby replied by email. “It doesn't necessarily imply wrongdoing by Ms. Brown, but rather emphasizes a fresh start.”

The Herald called Guyton City Hall requesting a statement from Brown, but she was unavailable. The Herald contacted Mayor Harville for a statement and he has yet to respond.
