‘Run Forrest Run’ 5K returns for its fourth year

Beaufort, SC – The Beaufort Digital Corridor (BDC) announces its annual fundraiser, the Run Forrest Run 5K, returns on Oct.5. Captivating Forrest Gump fans and avid runners alike, this is the race's fourth year opening the famous Woods Memorial Bridge to all who, like Forrest, just feel like running. Registration is now open, with early bird tickets available.

The Run Forrest Run 5K leads runners through historic Downtown Beaufort. The race begins on Bay Street and takes racers over the same iconic bridge Gump crosses in the Forrest Gump movie. This family-friendly event welcomes runners, walkers, pets, and children of all ages to participate. All participants are encouraged to don their best Forrest Gump getup and race to the finish line in hopes of claiming the Fastest Forrest Award.

The Run Forrest Run 5K proceeds support programs that provide accessible educational pathways and opportunities for individuals to upskill and thrive in high-wage tech jobs. Last year, the race drew in just over 500 runners from across the Lowcountry and neighboring states.

Local Girl Scouts need Effingham County’s help

In September, Effingham County Girl Scouts are having a Democracy Day where the girls who attend may earn up to four merit badges. To make the event a success, the girls are asking for Effingham County’s help.

While the girls would love to especially hear from any woman in a government office (elected or appointed), the survey is open to all residents of Effingham County.

Savannah State University to celebrate outstanding alumni with '40 Under 40' awards

Savannah State University (SSU) recently unveiled its inaugural 40 Under 40 Awards, a prestigious recognition aimed at honoring the achievements of accomplished alumni who have excelled in their respective fields before the age of 40.

SSU’s 40 Under 40 Awards will cover a diverse range of sectors, including business, academia, arts, sciences, and philanthropic service through non-profit work.

SSU's decision to institute the 40 Under 40 Awards underscores the university's commitment to acknowledging and applauding the outstanding success stories of its alumni, serving as a source of inspiration for current and future students.

Honorees must be SSU alumni and aspire to uphold their core values of collaboration, academic excellence, discovery and innovation, integrity, openness and inclusion and sustainability.

“40 Under 40 affords us the opportunity to recognize the impact our alumni are making daily in their chosen career paths and communities," said Marius L. Davis, M.A., Director of Alumni Relations. "We are excited to have the opportunity to highlight and celebrate their accomplishments. Our alumni are among the best and brightest and are proof positive that you can get anywhere from Savannah State University."

Memorial Health names Dr. Joshua Ferrell as program director

Savannah – Memorial Health announces Joshua Ferrell, MD, DABFM, FAAFP, has been named the new program director for its family medicine residency and family medicine-obstetrics fellowship.

“Dr. Ferrell is an experienced leader and teacher and we are excited to have him join us as the next program director for our family medicine residency,” said William Hannah, designated institutional official and executive director of medical education at Memorial Health. “Our family medicine residency was founded in 1976 and is a vital part of our graduate medical education program. I am confident it will enjoy continued success under Dr. Ferrell’s leadership.”

Dr. Ferrell was most recently at Campbell University/Sampson Regional Medical Center (SRMC) in Clinton, North Carolina, where he has served as associate program director, interim program director, adjunct assistant professor and director of family medicine – obstetrics and gynecology services since 2018. While at SRMC, Dr. Ferrell also held several leadership positions including medical staff president (2023), chief of family medicine (2021), chief of obstetrics and gynecology (2022) and vice chief of obstetrics and gynecology (2023 & 2024).

Prior to SRMC, Dr. Ferrell served as clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Buffalo family medicine residency program in Olean, New York.

He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

A medical leader with 21 years of clinical experience, Dr. Seibert will help lead ExperCARE’s expansion of services, which provides on-demand preventative care and functional medicine services, offering patients a more holistic approach to healthcare. He previously served as a pediatrician in primary care at Southcoast Health in Richmond Hill.

Dr. Seibert is a respected physician serving patients across coastal Georgia and has repeatedly been voted Best Pediatrician by Savannah Magazine, Connect Savannah, and Bryan County News readers. The Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics honored him as the Young Physician of the Year in 2014.

Dr. Seibert is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications. He authored two books on pediatric healthcare and earned an M.D. with honors from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, an MBA from Auburn University. and a B.S. in biology with honors from The University of Georgia in Athens. He completed his residency at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and has been a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Georgia Medical Society and the Medical Association of Georgia.

Memorial Health welcomes new heart specialist

Savannah — Memorial Health welcomes board-certified interventional cardiologist, Dr. Mazen Khalil, as the newest member of the facility’s heart care team. 

Dr. Khalil is triple board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He will work alongside the providers at Memorial Health University Physicians – Heart Care to help assess, diagnose and treat common heart care conditions including hypertension and coronary artery disease.
