DRT Townhall meeting set for Jan. 30

The public is invited to “Townhall #2” regarding concerns on the DRT plant in Ebenezer.

The meeting will be held in the social hall at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 301 N. Columbia Ave. in Rincon, Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 6:30-9 p.m.

In the previous townhall, panelists included members of Savannah Riverkeepers, Effingham County commissioners, and an environmental attorney.

Local student named to President’s List

Shelby Aiken of Springfield was named to the President’s List at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs for the Fall 2023 semester.

To be named to the President’s List a student must earn a quality grade point average of 4.0 during a given semester with full-time enrollment.

Aiken is a 2023 graduate of Effingham County High School where she played varsity softball all four years.

Valdosta State University announces Fall 2023 Dean's List

 

VALDOSTA -- Valdosta State University recognizes nearly 1,800 students who exemplified excellence and earned a spot on the Fall 2023 Dean's List.

To qualify for Dean's List at VSU, students must achieve a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher on nine or more semester hours with an institutional grade point average of 3.00 or higher.

The Fall 2023 Dean's List at VSU includes the following area residents:

Bracey Nelems, Makayla Cowan, and Tayler Weckbacher from Guyton; Nicolas Palefsky and Amanda Echevarria from Rincon; and Margaret Powell of Springfield.

Local student to compete for Miss Georgia Teen


Sydney Crawford, a senior at South Effingham High School, was crowned Miss Savannah’s Teen at a pageant Jan.14 at The Post Theatre on Tybee Island.

Crawford also won the talent award where she did a speed painting of one of her very own fashion designs. She also won a scholarship that she will be able to use as she continues her education in art.

This competition is a prelim in the Miss America organization, so her next stop is Miss Georgia. Last year she placed top 15 at Miss Georgia and has been working hard throughout the year to sharpen all her skills in hopes of bringing home the title of Miss Georgia’s Teen.  

Crawford is the president of her senior class and an officer of many other clubs. Her community service initiative is Let the Art Speak, a program she started to spread awareness that art can be used as a tool to cope with mental health. She holds workshops that give people of all ages a safe space to not only be creative but to: Accept, Recognize, and Take action toward their mental health.
