Uni-Big Band Halle to present free concert in Ebenezer Oct. 1

Before they officially kick off Oktoberfest in Savannah on Oct. 4, Uni-Big Band Halle, will present a free concert Oct. 1 at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 2980 Ebenezer Rd., Rincon, beginning at 3 p.m.

The concert is presented by the Georgia Salzburger Society and the Teutonic Council of Savannah.

Founded in 1993 by conductor and director Hartmut Reszel, the internationally acclaimed Uni-Big Band Halle features students and teachers from Martin Luther University in Halle and Wittenberg, Germany. The band specializes in big band-style jazz, pop standards, and original compositions and has performed worldwide. 

After the concert, the public is invited to enjoy a Southern-style meal in the church social hall. Tickets for the meal are $22 per person.

'CarePortal’ to launch live

The public is invited to the live launch of the Promise 686 CarePortal, Sept. 27, 9-10:30 a.m., at the Effingham Health System Education Complex, W. 1st St. Extension, in Springfield.

Promise 686 began in 2022 in Chatham County to meet physical needs of vulnerable biological, foster, or adoptive families. The CarePortal connects a family need with a Family Advocacy Ministry at a local church.

Local church congregations interested in creating a Family Advocacy Ministry (FAM) with Promise 686 may contact Lisa McCaslin, area director for Coastal Georgia at 912-667-0862 or by email at lmccaslin@promise686.org. Promise 686 provides training, resources, and support a church needs to establish a FAM.

Promise 686 is a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

First lady Jill Biden attends Georgia Hispanic Chamber event

 

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) celebrated the recognition of the 50 Most Influential Individuals in the Hispanic community in Georgia and inducted new members into its Hall of Fame Sept. 15. First lady Dr. Jill Biden attended the event along with Sen. Jon Ossoff.

The GHCC commemorated the start of Hispanic Heritage Month at Truist Park in Atlanta.

 “Our Administration is committed to supporting you – and listening to what you need. Because no one knows what (the Hispanic) community needs better than this community,” said Dr. Biden in her remarks. “So, I want to thank you for empowering your neighborhoods and opening the doors of opportunity for generations to come.”

Georgia’s Commissioner of Insurance and Fire Safety John King spoke on behalf of Gov. Brian Kemp. Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns, spoke at GHCC's Hall of Fame induction ceremony along with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.  

"This occasion not only recognizes the outstanding achievements of our community's leaders but also marks the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month in Georgia. It's a time when we celebrate our rich culture, history, and contributions to this great nation," stated Veronica Maldonado-Torres, President, and CEO of the GHCC.

Rincon APO Ian Gallagher honored

Ian Gallagher
Advanced Police Officer Ian Gallagher of Rincon PD was awarded the Medal of Valor at the Peace Officers Association of Georgia award banquet on Tybee Island Sept. 11. The award stems from the Freedom Rings Parade 2022, when Officer Gallagher stopped the vehicle driven by Anthony Rodriguez with a head-on crash most likely saving many lives. Rodriguez was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison earlier this year in that incident. (Submitted photo.)
