Special to the Herald

Effingham County High School and the entire community mourn the loss of a beloved figure, as we honor the life and enduring legacy of Coach Bob Griffith, who passed away Oct. 2 at age 79.

“Coach Griff” who served as the head football coach and athletic director at Effingham County High School for 18 years beginning in 1980, will be missed by many.

“Coach Griff’s unparalleled dedication to his team and students of Effingham County left an indelible mark on our community. Throughout his tenure, he exemplified unwavering commitment to the development and well-being of his players, both on and off the field. His coaching extended beyond football, instilling values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance in every student he coached or mentored,” the Effingham County School District said in a statement.

Under Coach Griff’s leadership, the Effingham County High School football program reached new heights securing a State Runner Up and South Georgia Championship in 1987 along with several Region Championships and earning the respect and admiration of rivals and fans alike. Beyond his numerous coaching achievements, he was known for his quiet compassionate mentorship, fostering a sense of family and camaraderie among his players and coaches.

Coach Griff’s legacy extends far beyond the football field. His impact on the lives of countless students, instilling in them the importance of hard work, discipline, and community, has continued to be felt throughout Effingham County even after his retirement. In the fall of 2022, we were humbled by the opportunity the board gave us to name the stadium at ECHS, the Bob Griffith Stadium. It truly has been an honor each Friday to hear the announcer say, “Welcome to the Griff” at Rebel Field.

“Coach Griff believed Rebel Football was truly ‘More Than Just a Game.’ He knew football was a vehicle to help mold young people into becoming productive adults once they left Effingham County High School. Coach Griff will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the district’s statement concluded.
