Special to the Herald
While the entire Southeast Coastal Georgia area cleans up after Hurricane Heléne blew through the area last week, the Herald asked for “shout outs” for neighbors helping neighbors. You know, people that stepped up to help not because they had to or get paid to, but because they wanted to.
“My neighbor is amazing, James Trye Eden on Magnolia Drive has been going nonstop helping us elderly neighbors,” wrote Rhonda Scott on Facebook. “We have one that has to have dialysis every day, one on oxygen, one 93 years old and myself (an) elderly widow; plus his own family with health issues.
“He has made sure that I am okay every day. James has not stopped running for everyone until midnight. He makes sure everyone is taking care of before he goes in to bed,” Scott continued. “I don’t know what I would have done without him. Amazing man James Trye! I wish i could write up a story about this guy. He has been through so much, but yet keeps running for anyone that needs him or asks him for his help. God bless him.”
“These kids made 118 uplifting cards to hand out in the community!! No power!” wrote Katie Lynn Watson of Rincon.
“Tony Plummer cooked and gave out many plates!!! Great ribs!” wrote Stephen McMahon.
“Wanda (and) Tony Plummer were amazing -- offering food trays for those in need; even offering to deliver!” seconded Sheila Ann Roberts on Facebook.
“A big shout out to Tony and Wanda Plummer! Yesterday they made to-go boxes of ribs and spaghetti! They fed the ones of us without power! Kudos to Tony's ribs! They were delicious! That's what communities do, help each other in times of need! Thank you both!” added Nancy Redmond.
“My son is the greatest when it comes to helping me and anyone he knows,” wrote Sherry Gilman. “He’s really stretched thin right now having helped who he knew from Pooler and Port Wentworth to his location in Rincon. I do want to acknowledge him. Jarrod Tipton, I am so proud to call you my son.”
“Empire Gym offered free showers today. It was a lifesaver!” wrote Wendy Mirabel.
“John Chapman, Jr. spent the entire day with me yesterday clearing roads, driveways and trees. He came ready and willing to work and he did just that,” wrote James Gerbasi of Rincon.
“Our neighbors are amazing. Everyone helping each other. One of our neighbors brought his tractor over to help pick up loads of debris and relocated to the back of property to burn when we are not in threat of another storm; so we don’t affect anyone with windows open,” wrote Levi Brown. “While we were feeding people in need at Dawgs and More, (the) neighborhood was helping us with clean up.”
“Today (Sunday) we traded bowling shoes and pizza to become the hands and feet of Jesus!” wrote Nancy Summerour of Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) from Guyton Christian Church. “We got to serve our community with some storm clean up! So proud of these teens as they worked, loved, and allowed Jesus to use them to spread love, kindness, and hope to those around us.”
“My faith in humanity is restored. I dropped my wallet at Parker’s in Rincon and a gentleman actually took the time and delivered it to me at my home,” wrote Scott Muse, Sr. “I am really grateful for this act of kindness.”
“Thank you to all those that helped clean up the grounds at St. John’s Lutheran Church. A special thanks for the scouts that brought the trailer and were a great deal of help themselves,” wrote Pastor Rick Johnson.
All these good deeds are in addition to local organizations such as the Effingham and Guyton Ys that opened their doors to anyone who needed a shower and a place to cool off and charge electronic devices; businesses that offered cooked food that would have otherwise gone bad; the list goes on.
You can continue to give shout outs on the Effingham Herald Facebook page.
