RINCON — Wreaths Across America Day will dawn in Effingham County on Dec. 18.
Volunteers will place wreaths on veterans’ graves at three local cemeteries, joining people at more than 2,500 other locations across the country, including Arlington National Cemetery.
“Screven County has one hundred percent coverage of their veterans,” local Wreaths Across America coordinator Erika Bragg said. “We are bringing it into Effingham County this year at Turkey Branch (Methodist Cemetery) and Bethel (Lutheran Church) — those are the two I’m starting — and Elam Egypt (Baptist Church) is doing it, too.”
The is the second year that Screven County has participated in Wreaths Across America, a national nonprofit organization. The Screven County chapter has identified more than 2,400 graves at 75 churches/cemeteries worthy of a wreath.
Bragg said the public is encouraged to participate in Wreaths Across America events. They feature veterans’ descendants placing a wreath on their loved one’s grave. A wreath sponsorship costs $15.
The Turkey Branch ceremony is set Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. Bethel Lutheran will conduct its event Dec. 19 at the same time. The Elam Egypt ceremony will occur following the conclusion of Dec. 19 church services.
